I’m a beginner fisherman and am not sure sure what everything is even for. Say I’m using a spinner, where does the swivel go up on the line and will any knot work? Also with bait fishing will the swivel be in the same spot?
I use swivels between my fishing line and my leader. I use an improved cinch for most of the knots I tie. You can learn knots here: http://www.netknots.com/html/fishing_knots.html

In general, the swivel goes at the end of the line, and the rest of the tackle attaches to the other end of it. The purpose of the swivel is to keep your bait’s motions from twisting the line up and making a mess when you try to cast. Even the best swivel won’t necessarily prevent line twist when using a spinner, and it’s pretty much always going to be a problem when trolling with anything that might tend to rotate.

i tie the main loop part onto my main line then attach all tackle onto the snap part of a snap swivel

I think you’ve gotten good info so far. I will add though, don’t at all think you have to use a swivel in all scenarios. Personally, I’m a Bass fisherman. Never once have I used a swivel for anything. You don’t need one for something like a spinnerbait.

You’ve already got some fairly good responses so will just add (seein’ as how your just startin’ out) a’ link that will answer A’LOT of questions ya’ may have regarding fishin’. Go through it and do some learnin’ cause it contains great stuff in a’ very simple format (ya’ just might give thought in addin’ it to your computers favorites/bookmarks for future referral). The site will give run downs on the various fishin’ rods n’ reels, along with the castin’ of them, different baits both artificial and live, freshwater fish species and how to fish em’, etc., etc… I don’t have ta’ say, "Hope the link helps" mainly because I know it will ~ trust me, been fishin’ for over 50+ years both sport and commercial (family Salmon, Seining, Trolling boats in AK.) <);-3
http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/fishing/sitemap.htm#whichhookHave turned others on to the link/site who are in the startin’ stages like yourself and have received nothin’ but praise and good words from them regarding it, via Answers messages…
Added: When your usin’ an Inline spinner like a Roostertail, Panther Martin, Blue Fox etc., forget about the swivel and tie it directly to the eye of the spinner. Barrel swivels are basically used for tyin’ main line to one end and a’ leader to the other. Snap swivel be the other type and are used by some (easier to change lure/spinner) but, personally don’t use em’, just barrel…
2 knots I use religiously be the Palomar and or Clinch knots

Make a loop at the end of your line place an overhand knot close to where the short end is using both lines and do it again close to it. At the doubled end of the loop squeeze it together and pass it into the swivel eye or hoo eye and then over the entire swivel or item. You can undo it in reverse to remove the swivel , hook weight or lure. This simple knot will do as well or better than any knot you will ever learn and it works on all lines up to maybe 120 pound monofilament test. Many people use swivels to attach things to or prevent line twist while others like me believe swivels can scare fish away and come open to allow a trophy to get away. Fishing is all about trial and error so try a million knots and then you will come back to this one.
